Sher Shahi is a prominent figure in Nepal’s film and theater industry, known for his work as an executive filmmaker, producer, and director. Over the years, he has made notable contributions not only in production and direction but also in acting, writing, and editing, making him a versatile artist. His unique talent and passion for filmmaking have earned him recognition in both the Nepali film industry and the theater community.

Career and Major Works:

Turning Point in His Career:

Sher Shahi’s turning point into the world of filmmaking came during the shooting of the Bollywood movie CHUPCHUPKE (starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor) in Anjuna, Goa, India. but journey into the film industry truly began after a life-changing moment while witnessing the shooting of a South Indian film starring Mahesh Babu and Kajol at Calangute Beach, Goa, India. Witnessing this production deeply inspired him and solidified his desire to pursue a career in the film industry. The experience exposed him to the intricacies of filmmaking on a larger scale, which further fueled his passion for directing, producing, and storytelling. Following this inspiration, Sher moved to Mumbai to pursue his career in filmmaking. However, after several years of struggle and not finding enough opportunities for Nepalese filmmakers, he decided to relocate to Kathmandu in 2008, where he has been working in the industry ever since.

Education and Belief in Continuous Learning:

Sher Shahi believes in the power of learning, education, and experience. He has completed nearly all fundamental courses related to film and theater, continuously honing his craft. Academically, Sher has completed  M.Phil. in  Economics, and has been awarded a Ph.D. scholarship from the Film Development Board, where he is conducting research on Micro Film Production Models. This research is aimed at improving the understanding and development of small-scale, independent film production, contributing to the growth of the Nepali film industry.

Sher Shahi is an author and has written multiple books, including:

  1. “Basic Theatre Education” – This book provides a foundational guide to theater, helping aspiring actors and enthusiasts understand key concepts and practices in the field of theater.
  2. “Production Cost of Nepali Feature Movies” – In this insightful book, Sher Shahi delves into the financial aspects of filmmaking in Nepal as well as the filmmaking process. He explores the cost structures and budget breakdowns involved in producing a Nepali feature film, offering valuable knowledge for filmmakers, producers, and anyone involved in film production in Nepal.

In addition to his work in the film industry, Sher has been a part-time teacher in schools and colleges for the past 14 years, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of students. Sher Shahi’s dedication to his craft, his diverse body of work, and his commitment to education have made him a respected and influential figure in Nepal’s film and theater landscape. His journey—from his initial inspiration in Goa to his ongoing work in Kathmandu—reflects his determination, passion, and love for filmmaking.
